Pakistani film, Saawan, is really making an impression not only in Pakistan but internationally. Having won 4 international awards, including the summer’s International Film Festival Best Foreign Language Feature, it is no surprise that it could potentially be a contender for the Oscars. Announced yesterday, the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee has chosen this film to be submitted for Oscar consideration (Best Foreign Film) for the 2018 Academy Awards. Now, what is so great about this film?
The thrilling drama directed by Farhan Alam follows the true story of a disabled boy facing difficulties in Pakistan. The nine-year-old is left abandoned by his family and must survive on his own. The audience is drawn to the boy’s journey as he experiences the evil calamities of society such as abductors, burglars and more; a haunting and suspenseful story yet truly eye-opening. The cinematography of the film encompasses a barren wasteland, hence the name, Saawan.
This is a remarkable story about a disabled child rising above the stereotypical evils that try and trap him. At first glance, showcasing the harsh realities of our world but then, becomes an inspiring story of rising above and breaking boundaries.
A must-watch this year and the Pakistani community is hopeful that Saawan makes it to the final nomination list for the Academy Awards.
